Texas winters are short, but they’re the best time of year for a hot tub. The air is cool, the bugs are mostly gone, and a fire pit actually feels good at night. If you’re planning a romantic getaway in Texas this winter, look for three things: a private hot tub or sauna, real heat inside, and a fire pit you don’t have to share.
Every stay below has all three. Four of them are in Coldspring, about an hour north of Houston near Lake Livingston and the Sam Houston National Forest. The rest are at Lake Bastrop, 45 minutes from Austin.
Near Houston: four stays in Coldspring
The MÖÖN House
The MÖÖN House is the first MÖÖN House in the United States, designed by ÖÖD House in Estonia. The walls are glass, so after dark you’re looking out at the trees and the sky. The site is fully fenced, and there are curtains throughout.
For winter, the important parts are the private two-person electric sauna (turn the dial and it heats itself), a plunge pool that doubles as a wood-fired hot tub, a covered deck, and full heat inside. It sleeps 2, and a romance package is available as an add-on.
The Zen Den
The Zen Den is an A-frame cabin on our 11 wooded acres. Out back you get a private dry sauna and an outdoor soaking hot tub, plus a fire pit with logs included and a covered patio with a gas grill and pizza oven. Inside there’s a queen memory-foam bed, a rainfall shower, heat and A/C, and Starlink Wi-Fi. Check the listing for current rates.
The ÖÖD Texas Mirror House
The ÖÖD Texas Mirror House has the most complete outdoor setup we offer for two people: a wood-fired hot tub and Nordic plunge pool, a mirrored dry sauna, a large outdoor soaking tub with hot water on demand, a rainforest shower, and a fire pit. The wood-fired tub takes 2 to 3 hours to heat, so light it in the afternoon. Inside are floor-to-ceiling windows, a queen bed, robes, and heat and A/C. Check the listing for current rates.
The Wonderland Geo Dome
The Wonderland Geo Dome is a 426-square-foot dome with an Alice in Wonderland theme. It has a stargazing hot tub on a private deck, a fire pit with 5 logs included per night, robes, a pizza oven, and heat and A/C inside. Birthday and romantic setup packages are available. All four Coldspring stays are spread across 11 acres, about 100 yards apart, with trees and fencing between them.
Near Austin: Lake Bastrop
At Lake Bastrop, The Hideaway and The Bloom are ÖÖD mirror houses for two, each with a private wood-fired hot tub imported from Estonia. In winter, build a small fire in the heater and it becomes a hot soak. Both have heat inside and a fire pit outside, and they start at $299 a night.
If you’re bringing family or another couple, The Armadillo (sleeps 4) and The Magnolia (sleeps 6) are lakefront cabins with their own heated cowboy pools, fire pits, and gas grills.
The Bastrop stays are inside LCRA parks on the lake, so other park visitors will be around.
Tips for a winter glamping trip in Texas
- Plan for the hot tub. Wood-fired tubs can’t be preheated before you arrive. Start the fire soon after check-in.
- Pack layers. Days can be warm and nights cold. Bring a warm layer for the walk from the tub to the door.
- Check for burn bans. In dry weather the county can ban open wood fires. Check your listing’s burn ban notice before you go.
- Bring a lighter. At the Mirror House you’ll need your own long lighter or matches for the fire pit and hot tub.
- Book weekends early. Weekend stays have a two-night minimum, and they fill first.
Holiday note: Most of our units close December 24 through January 1. Only Wild & Boujee Ranch (W&B Ranch) is open then.
